Tips For Stopping Smoking
Stopping smoking can be difficult, so we have put together some tips to help you
Remember why you are doing this
Make a list of the reasons why you want to stop smoking and put it in a place where you will see it every day. Keeping a record will help you get through those times when your resolve to stop weakens.
Distract yourself
If you feel tempted to smoke, use your nicotine replacement product. And think about anything except lighting a cigarette – something pleasant, or why you want to stop. If you deal successfully with a tempting situation, you will find it easier to deal with that situation next time it arises.
Follow the instructions on the packaging
OK, that sounds rather obvious but you’d be surprised by the number of patients that we have seen who don’t read the instructions and then complain that the product didn’t work for them.
Use enough of the product
Most people don’t use enough of their nicotine replacement product, so they aren’t giving themselves the same dose of nicotine that they were getting from their cigarettes when they were smoking.
If at first you don’t succeed, keep trying
Relapses can happen, so don’t stop trying. The average smoker tries three times before they finally quit. It can be helpful to think of your relapse as a temporary blip, rather than a failure. If you slip up, learn from the experience so that next time you’ll be able to deal with that situation more successfully.
